Meet the Bala Yoga Team: Brian Charlton

January 1 2014

Brian has been teaching one physical modality or another since he entered the work force at 15 years old. After catching the yoga bug in 2001, he decided to become a teacher, graduating from Sonic Yoga NYC in 2007. At the same time, he began to explore the beauty of the partner yoga practice and has never looked back – practicing, playing, and teaching consistently since then.

Brian teaches many styles of yoga, including Vinyasa, Restorative, Yin, and Acro yoga. His classes all contain elements of breath, playfulness and control of movement. Through all of his teachings, he simply hopes his students come away with a better understanding of their own ability, physically and mentally. The emphasis throughout his classes is simple: yoga is truly about union. Be it with the divine, between body and breath, or your Acro Yoga partner!

Read on for a brief Q&A with Brian!

How/when did you begin practicing yoga?

My first yoga class was at the Bellevue club in 2002, but Sonic Yoga in NYC is where I “found” yoga.

What is your favorite part of teaching?

Making my students laugh! Seeing them overcome challenges. Watching community develop and friendships forge.

What is your favorite pose?

I have really strong legs and feel so stable in my standing balances. I always look forward to them when I practice.

What one piece of advice would you offer to new/aspiring yogis?

Breathe.

What one piece of advice would you offer to yogis considering Teacher Training?

Prepare to: make lasting friendships; learn more about your body than you ever thought possible; harness your healing touch!
